Is the legendary artist, publisher, and secret weapon behind studios such as Warner Bros, Lucasfilm, and the Walt Disney Company. He led a quiet revolution creating “Pop Imagery” from cartoons, comics, and movies to the world of fine art. In the mid eighties he convinced the Walt Disney Company that there was a market for upscale art images and proved it when it became the genesis of a “Pop Art Phenomenon”. A veteran in the world of art publishing, Zotos art directed and published some of the most revealing and thought provoking images of the last 25 years.
Zotos began his official publishing career in collaboration with the legendary British Illustrator, Alan Aldridge (“Beatles Illustrated Lyrics” ). As a team Zotos and Aldridge published the celebrated surreal portrait of John Lennon. On the designated week of release, the project was derailed, due to the untimely death of Lennon. A few months later, Yoko Ono insisted on the release and stated, “John loved that painting”. The portrait was prominently placed in the first American “Hard Rock CafĂ©” on 57th Street in New York City.
-1984 Hard Rock Cafe co-founders, Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton, contracted with Zotos and Aldridge to redefine the Hard Rock logo for their planned worldwide expansion. This endeavor resulted in a long term relationship of merchandising which included the famous Hard Rock t-shirt.1986 Zotos joined forces with OSP Publishing, the largest poster and merchandiser in the U.S., headed by licensing veteran Joseph Angard. Together they formed Art One Images and initiated the first Disney art program that targeted an adult art market. Over forty images were created in the program and became the genesis of “The Art of Walt Disney” collection.
The birth of Zanart Publishing, Inc. Zotos, Robert Stein, and Stephan Adelman, Esq., formed the new entity and began acquiring licensing agreements with America’s largest entertainment companies. Within four months, Zotos was named president and CEO of the newly founded public company.
-1992 Zanart became the leader in product development for the Warner Bros Studio stores and was responsible for thousands of images created, published and distributed to more than 150 stores worldwide. Among those images was the unforgettable “Speechless” , the tribute to Mel Blanc. Zotos lobbied the studio and the Blanc family and got permission to publish “Speechless” . It became the highest grossing lithograph in the history of animation art, with sales in excess of twenty million dollars, according to the Wall Street Journal.
-1994 Zotos with partner Robert Stein obtained a license from Lucasfilm to create a myriad of Star Wars collectibles. The first idea implemented was the blueprints of the spacecrafts from Star Wars, followed by Chromart prints, portfolios, and limited edition art prints. The products were distributed to over 4000 comic book retailers, Spencer Gifts, Dapy, QVC, the Smithsonian, and other specialty retailers worldwide.
House of Blues Sunset Strip founder, Isaac Tigrett enlisted Zotos to join his creative team to merchandise art and collectibles for his new venture.
Zanart Publishing Inc. raised six million dollars in a public offering and traded on the American Stock exchange.
-1999 Zotos paid homage to Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol by creating a series known as “Square Faces”. These graphics depicted D.C. Comics’ characters up close, with a pop art sensibility designed by Zotos. An estimated 25,000 units were sold, representing five million dollars in sales.
After working with Bob Kane on a series of successful lithographs, Zotos published Kane’s autobiography, “Batman and Me”. Zotos also art directed and published the Batman creator’s last art image, “The Gold Batman”. Additionally, in 1997, Zoco Publishing Inc. was formed to implement manufacturing components to augment Zotos’ publishing company.
Zotos was asked by the heads of Lucasfilm to create seven products to be sold exclusively at the Smithsonian Institute Star Wars Exhibition, “The Magic of the Myth”. The exhibition was one of the most successful events ever held at the prestigious museum and the products were a sellout.
until present Zotos leveraged his position and contacts by donations of art to numerous charities and non-profits. One in particular, was the Los Angeles Chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. In addition, he invested resources and time to the MusiCares program, the charity arm of the Grammys (NARAS) and continues those efforts today.
At the 30th anniversary of Art Expo International Las Vegas, Zotos was selected to create in art form a Lifetime Achievement Award, to present to legendary actor/artist Tony Curtis. The exclusive photographs of the award presentation can be viewed at www.exposay.com/tom-zotos-artexpo-las-vegas. Additionally, Zotos unveiled his painting “Meeting Adjourned”, a tribute to Frank Sinatra receiving worldwide news coverage during the special collector’s exhibition where Zotos’ art was featured.2008 Zotos began consulting to artist Jeffrey Sparr, founder of PeaceLove Studios in Providence, Rhode Island resulting in the formation of a brick and mortar gallery, a non-profit foundation, and an education program. Zotos with Sparr contributed limited edition artwork, “PeaceLove Grammy’s” in this year’s 2009 Grammy Awards MusiCares program honoring Neil Diamond.
Zoco Publishing, Inc., in association with Clampett Studio Collections reintroduced the historic artwork “Speechless” in celebration of the 20th anniversary of its initial release. Currently, Tom Zotos is working with Gurley and Co., the licensor of the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation, developing art for a future awareness and merchandising campaign. Also, Zotos has continued to be creative director for PeaceLove Studios and recently brought artists, Andre Miripolsky and Richard Duardo aboard the roster of PeaceLove Studios’ artists.
